The Whirlwind, and the Exhale
I haven’t written here in a while.
Not because there hasn’t been anything to say.
If anything, there has been too much.
The last few months have felt like a whirlwind of emotions—uncertainty, frustration, disappointment, anxiety, anger, self-doubt, clarity, courage, and eventually… a little peace.
There were moments when I questioned myself.
Am I asking for too much? Am I being too sensitive? Should I just let it go? Is advocating for myself creating more problems than it’s solving?
And somewhere along the way, I realized something:
Advocating for yourself can be uncomfortable even when you’re right to do it.
Sometimes growth doesn’t look like confidently walking into a room knowing exactly what to say.
Sometimes it looks like your heart racing while you say it anyway.
Sometimes it looks like setting a boundary and then wondering if you were too harsh.
Sometimes it looks like asking for clarity when you’d rather stay quiet.
Sometimes it looks like realizing that something hurt you, even though you wish it hadn’t.
And sometimes, healing isn’t getting the perfect apology, the perfect explanation, or the perfect resolution.
Sometimes healing is simply getting to the point where you can sit across from someone, have the conversation you’ve been avoiding, and realize…
I can breathe again.
Recently, I had one of those conversations.
It wasn’t perfect. Neither was everything that led us there.
But we talked.
And I chose to go into it with an open heart—not because everything that happened suddenly didn’t matter, but because I don’t want to carry the weight of every difficult interaction forever.
There is a difference between moving forward and pretending nothing happened.
I’m learning that.
I’m also learning that my nervous system remembers things my mind sometimes tries to minimize.
That being “the strong one” doesn’t mean I never get overwhelmed.
That being someone who understands mental health doesn’t make me immune to experiencing hard emotions.
That I can be self-aware and still hurt.
I can be resilient and still need reassurance.
I can forgive and still have boundaries.
I can love peace without avoiding every uncomfortable conversation required to get there.
And maybe most importantly—
I can advocate for myself without becoming someone I’m not.
I don’t need to become hardened to protect myself.
I don’t need to become loud to be heard.
I don’t need to prove that my feelings are valid before I’m allowed to have them.
I can stay soft and still stand firmly.
So, I’m coming back to this space with a little less urgency and a little more perspective.
The story isn’t tied up neatly.
Life rarely is.
But the weight feels a little lighter.
And today, that’s enough.
Maybe this season wasn’t about learning how to control the whirlwind.
Maybe it was about learning that I can stand in the middle of it, breathe, listen to myself, choose my next step, and eventually find my way back to stillness.
Growth over comfort.
Even when growth is messy.
Even when it hurts.
Even when the lesson is simply learning how to come home to yourself again.
