If you had asked me several years ago if I would one day be teaching Mental Health First Aid classes throughout Southern Illinois, I probably would have laughed.
My journey began through my work in behavioral health and learning and development. As I spent more time supporting staff, coordinating trainings, and working alongside professionals dedicated to helping others, my boss could see my desire to be more active and becoming certified conveniently fulfilled grant requirements for providing mental health education that was practical, approachable, and accessible to everyone—not just those working in healthcare.
That realization led me to Mental Health First Aid.
After becoming certified as an Adult and Youth Mental Health First Aid Instructor, I discovered something powerful: this training equips everyday people with the knowledge and confidence to recognize signs of mental health and substance use challenges, start supportive conversations, and connect individuals with appropriate resources.
Over the years, I've had the privilege of training healthcare professionals, educators, community members, and workplace teams. I've witnessed meaningful discussions, moments of breakthrough understanding, and countless participants leave feeling more prepared to support those around them.
What continues to inspire me is knowing that every person certified through Mental Health First Aid has the potential to make a difference in someone's life. The impact extends far beyond the classroom—into homes, workplaces, schools, and communities.
Today, Mental Health First Aid remains one of the most rewarding parts of my professional journey. I am grateful for every opportunity to teach, learn, and contribute to creating communities where mental health conversations are met with understanding, compassion, and action.
Thank you for following along as I share stories, lessons learned, and experiences from the classroom. I'm excited to continue this journey with you.
